Venezuela's Supreme Court backs Maduro's controversial presidential win
Venezuelan court declared Maduro's election win despite evidence of opponent's victory, surprising many and allowing Maduro to strengthen his presidency claim.

On a recent Thursday, Venezuela’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice made a controversial ruling, declaring that the country’s autocratic leader, Nicolás Maduro, emerged victorious in the July 28 presidential election. This assertion came despite robust evidence indicating that Maduro's rival had secured a significant portion of the votes.
The court's declaration, heavily influenced by Maduro's allies, cited support for the victory claim from a cohort of “national and international experts”, along with the tally reports generated by the voting machines. However, it failed to present any substantial evidence to corroborate this claim. This lack of transparency has sparked dissatisfaction, with countless Venezuelans taking to the streets to demand proof of Maduro's electoral success.
Madduro's Acceptance of Verdict
Despite widespread skepticism, Maduro appears poised to leverage this ruling to bolster his claim to the presidency. January 2023 marks the commencement of his new term, extending until 2031. This development underscores the court's longstanding role as a facilitator of Maduro's policies, further solidifying the government's grip on power.
