Yankees Radio Broadcaster John Sterling Retires at 85 After 34 Seasons
Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling retires at 85 after 34 seasons, having called over 5,000 regular-season games and 200 postseason games.
After an impressive 34-year career as a Yankees radio broadcaster, John Sterling, aged 85, has announced his immediate retirement. His last game was against the Blue Jays on April 7, and it marked the conclusion of 5,420 regular-season games, in addition to 211 postseason games. Sterling's illustrious career began back in September 1989, and he astoundingly broadcasted 5,060 consecutive games until July 2019.
Reduced Schedule and Pregame Ceremony
In recent years, Sterling had cut back on his broadcasting schedule, and he was absent during the team's trips to Houston and Toronto. To honor his remarkable contribution, a pregame ceremony will be held before Saturday's game against Tampa Bay.
Sterling expressed his gratitude, stating, "I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years. As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years. It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday.
