Despite waiting until the fourth round to add a wide receiver, general manager Eric DeCosta justified the selection of North Carolina's Devontez Walker by emphasizing his suitability for the team's needs.

Meeting the Team's Needs

DeCosta described Walker as a tall, explosive player with exceptional speed and jumping ability, highlighting the Ravens' requirement for a 'big, linear, outside, field-stretcher type of guy' to complement Jackson's preferences. Notably, Jackson expressed the need for this type of receiver, underscoring the significance of the team's decision. DeCosta also referenced the impact of former Ravens wideout Torrey Smith, emphasizing the value of a player who can excel in catching vertical routes and forcing opposing teams to adjust their coverages.

Walker's Potential Impact

Despite Walker's modest draft position as a fourth-round pick, his potential impact is evident. In the 2023 season, he recorded 15 explosive receptions, demonstrating his ability to make significant contributions within a limited timeframe due to NCAA eligibility rules. In a shortened campaign, he showcased his skills, amassing 17 explosive receptions on only 332 routes at Kent State in 2022. These impressive stats position him favorably, ranking him inside the top 50 nationally among the 332 receivers with at least 50 total receptions during that time.
