Jayden Daniels Named Commanders' Starting QB, Surpassing Expectations Ahead of Preseason Opener
Jayden Daniels is named the Commanders' starting QB, impressing teammates with his skills and work ethic; he'll debut against the Jets.

Dan Quinn, the ex-Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, announced on Tuesday morning that rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels from LSU, the No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner, would be the starting quarterback for the Commanders. This decision came ahead of the team's first unofficial depth chart release and Daniels is set to start in the preseason opener against the Jets on Saturday.
Daniels: Surpassing Expectations
Quinn expressed his surprise at Daniels' level of readiness and command, saying, "I had high expectations for him coming in, but I'd say he's definitely surpassed even my expectations of readiness, command." The coach noted the respect Daniels has garnered from his teammates, emphasizing the hard work he has put in to learn the system. This outcome had been anticipated for some time, yet it wasn't until late July that Daniels began taking the majority of first-team reps in training camp, despite Marcus Mariota initially getting the starting position.
Competition and Strong Performance
Daniels has taken the competition in stride, a testament to his experience when he transferred from Arizona State to LSU, showcasing his resilience and adaptability. "No, I like competing," Daniels stated in late July. "I'm a competitor, so regardless if I was announced the starter or not, you still got to compete. You still can't be content of your job, comfortable. I think it is just your job to seal the deal. You got to go out there and compete. So for me, it's not a problem at all. I like competing."
The rookie quarterback has made a notable impact on his teammates with his work ethic and on-field performance, adopting habits from his college days, including early arrivals at the practice facility and the use of virtual reality technology to hone his skills. His proactive approach has not gone unnoticed; wide receiver Jahan Dotson praised his ability to enable receivers to perform better. "With him, anything is possible, and he's showing you that," Dotson said. "He's putting the ball in places where it makes our job so much more easier, because he is putting it where only you can get it, and the defender has no play on it." Daniels' exceptional talent and dedication have sparked excitement among his teammates.
Daniels Among 2024 NFL First-Round Quarterback Draft Class
Daniels was among five quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 2024 draft, with only him and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams of the Bears currently in the starter role. Daniels' early success has positioned him as a crucial player for the Commanders, highlighting his nickname "Star" in training camp and the first preseason game.
Daniels emphasized that while the decisions regarding the starting quarterback are ultimately up to coach Dan Quinn and Adam Peters, he believes it's his job to earn the position through his performance in practice and games.
