Kareem Hunt Joins Kansas City Chiefs Active Roster Amid Pacheco Injury Concerns
The Chiefs signed Kareem Hunt to the active roster after Isiah Pacheco's injury, waiving Keaontay Ingram, complicating their running back situation.
Last week, following the leg injury of Isiah Pacheco, the Kansas City Chiefs made the decision to add their former player, Kareem Hunt, to the practice squad. Although Hunt was not activated for Kansas City's Sunday night triumph over the Atlanta Falcons, he was subsequently promoted to the active roster on Tuesday. To make room for Hunt, the Chiefs waived running back Keaontay Ingram as reported by ESPN. Ingram had been elevated to the active roster from the practice squad in the previous week.
Player Performances and Team Dynamics
In the inaugural game without Pacheco, undrafted rookie Carson Steele took the lead in the backfield, garnering the majority of snaps and touches. Steele rushed 17 times for 72 yards and also made a reception for 2 yards. Following him was Samaje Perine, who contributed with 6 carries for 25 yards and 3 receptions for 15 yards. The inclusion of Hunt on the 53-man roster introduces a new dynamic to the team's running back situation.
Kareem Hunt's Journey
Kareem Hunt, known for previously leading the NFL in rushing in 2017 while with the Chiefs, had a tumultuous departure from the team midway through the 2018 season due to a released video showing him involved in an altercation. Although not legally charged, Hunt's reputation took a hit. Subsequently, he joined the Cleveland Browns and spent five seasons with the team, struggling to make a significant impact. Over those years, Hunt averaged 4.0 yards per carry, with his performance declining to 3.8 and 3.0 yards per carry in the last two seasons. His receiving averages also reached career lows, emphasizing a downturn in his production.
Assessing Hunt's Current Potential
Entering his age-29 season, Kareem Hunt's ability to contribute effectively may be called into question. However, his familiarity with the Chiefs organization may afford him an opportunity to re-establish himself within the team's dynamic. The combination of his prior experience and the current circumstances could potentially play a pivotal role in shaping the Chiefs' running back approach moving forward.
