Kirby Smart Apologizes for Comment on Jake Pope's Postgame Celebration Following Loss to Ole Miss
Georgia coach Kirby Smart apologized for calling defensive back Jake Pope an "idiot" over celebratory actions after a loss, acknowledging it was a mistake.
On a recent Tuesday, Georgia Bulldogs' head coach, Kirby Smart, extended an apology for his previous remarks towards defensive back Jake Pope. This came in the wake of Pope's viral celebration following the Bulldogs' loss to Ole Miss during week 11.
Smart candidly confessed to the media, admitting, "I should have not called the kid an idiot. That was a mistake by me," acknowledging the impact of his words on Pope's image.
Viral Celebration Sparks Controversy
The controversy ignited when video footage surfaced, depicting Pope celebrating on the field after the Bulldogs' 28-10 defeat to Ole Miss. Accompanying Pope in the video were individuals donning merchandise associated with his childhood friend and former Buford High School teammate, Reece McIntyre, who now plays offensive line at Ole Miss.
Smart expressed his disapproval during a press conference, labeling Pope's actions as "just stupid." He emphasized that while Pope was embarrassed and upset about the situation, it was a lapse in judgment given the long-standing friendship with McIntyre. However, Smart chose to redirect his focus towards the upcoming Tennessee game, deeming the incident not worth further energy.
