Luis Rubiales to Stand Trial for Sexual Assault on Jennifer Hermoso at Women's World Cup

Luis Rubiales faces trial for nonconsensual kiss on Jennifer Hermoso at Women’s World Cup. Prosecutors seek 2.5 years in prison. Three other officials also accused.

Spain's former soccer chief, Luis Rubiales, will soon face trial on a serious charge that has shocked the sports world. The incident in question took place at the Women’s World Cup medal ceremony in August, and it involves a prominent player, Jennifer Hermoso.

Mr. Rubiales stands accused of grabbing the head of Jennifer Hermoso and forcibly kissing her on the mouth, an act that has been labeled as nonconsensual by the judge. This has led to a charge of sexual assault, as well as an additional coercion charge related to pressuring Ms. Hermoso to show support for him after the incident.

The Legal Process

The decision to put Mr. Rubiales on trial was made by Spain’s National Court on Wednesday evening, following a previous ruling by a judge in January. Public prosecutors and Ms. Hermoso’s lawyers are seeking a total of two and a half years of prison time for Mr. Rubiales: one year for the sexual assault charge and an additional 18 months for the coercion charge.

It's not just Mr. Rubiales who is facing legal scrutiny in this matter. Three other former soccer officials, including Jorge Vilda, the former women’s team’s coach, are also accused of coercion and could each face 18 months in prison.
