Mexican Government Blames Contractor for Maya Train Derailment in Embarrassing Mishap

The Mexican government blames a contractor for a train derailment on president's Maya Train. Critics deem the project wasteful and damaging.

On March 25, a train car derailed on the Maya Train, a significant tourist rail route in Mexico. The incident, which did not result in any injuries, highlighted a loose railway fitting. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been a strong advocate of the $20 billion railway project and aims to complete it before leaving office on September 30.

Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval revealed that the derailment was caused by a manually operated rail switch, which is actually designed to be operated automatically. Due to the absence of the automated system, the switch had to be manually adjusted. Unfortunately, during one of these manual adjustments, a fitting was not properly secured, resulting in the derailment.

Accountability and Damage Assessment

The companies involved, including the train manufacturer, Alstom, and the constructor of the rail line, Azvindi, are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the mishap. This turn of events has drawn attention to the concerns raised by critics about the environmental impact and rushed construction timelines of the Maya Train project.

Despite warnings from activists about potential damage to the limestone caves in the Yucatan peninsula, President López Obrador insisted on building the railway through the jungle. Additionally, promises to protect the caves by constructing an elevated platform were compromised as concrete and steel pilings were directly embedded into the caves. These actions have sparked outrage from environmentalists and indigenous groups.

Cultural and Archaeological Significance

The caves and underground water sources in Mexico's Caribbean coast hold immense cultural and historical significance, being home to ancient human remains and serving as the region's vital freshwater reservoir. The decision to construct the railway without considering these crucial aspects has drawn heavy criticism and has reignited the debate about conservation and preservation of cultural heritage.

Project Progress and Future Plans

Despite the challenges and controversies, parts of the train line have been inaugurated, with plans to connect beach resorts and archaeological sites. Notably, the project has involved the active participation of the Mexican army and is intended to be operated by the armed forces.
