Shoplifting Spikes 24% While Other Crimes Decline: Council on Criminal Justice Report

Crime rates fell in the first half of 2024, except for a 24% increase in shoplifting, which retailers and statistics show differently.

In the first half of 2024, all crime types except shoplifting decreased, as reported by the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ).

Shoplifting is on the rise

The study, analyzing 23 cities, showed a 24% increase in shoplifting, while other crimes dropped. However, the accuracy of shoplifting data is questionable, with a 10% rise since 2019, contradicting claims of a pandemic-related surge. Reported by CBS, Adam Gelb, CCJ's president, highlighted the discrepancy in reporting shoplifting incidents, leading to misconceptions about its prevalence. Despite claims by retailers attributing closures to rising shoplifting, other factors, such as online competition, may also be at play.
