Brewers' Sal Frelick Suffers Injury, MRI Scheduled as Playoff Impact Looms
Brewers' Sal Frelick suffered a left hip injury colliding with the wall, raising concerns for his availability in the playoffs.
The Milwaukee Brewers are facing a potentially serious blow to their outfield as right fielder Sal Frelick suffered an injury while chasing a foul ball against the New York Mets. The incident occurred on a Friday night in Milwaukee, while pursuing a foul ball hit by Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez, who eventually walked. Frelick collided with the right field wall, sustaining a left hip injury.
Medical Updates and Season Performance
X-rays conducted at the ballpark were inconclusive, and Frelick is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday, as per manager Pat Murphy's announcement via MLB.com. Murphy expressed concern about the impact of Frelick's potential absence, noting the significance of his contribution to the team, saying, "That will be a big blow if he can't play, which, you have to lean toward that right now."
Frelick's Contributions
The 24-year-old Frelick has been an integral part of the Brewers' lineup this season, showcasing his skills as an everyday player in his second year in the majors. As of the incident, he boasted an impressive stat line, hitting .259/.320/.335 with 22 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 32 RBIs, 66 runs, 18 stolen bases, and a 2.0 WAR this season.
Challenges Ahead for the Brewers
Compounding the situation, the Brewers are already without superstar outfielder Christian Yelich, who was lost for the season back in July. Should Frelick's injury sideline him as the playoffs approach, the Brewers may have to rely on Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell, and Blake Perkins as their outfield trio.
