Tom Brady Admits Tension with Bill Belichick During Patriots Exit
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick experienced tension during Brady's final years with the Patriots, leading to their eventual split.

Tom Brady and Bill Belichick's relationship has been a subject of much speculation since Brady's departure from the New England Patriots in 2020. While both have maintained a level of civility in public, the underlying tension that contributed to their split has rarely been addressed directly.
In his latest weekly newsletter, Brady finally shed some light on the dynamics between him and Belichick during his final years with the Patriots. He acknowledged that a "creeping decision" to leave the team had been brewing in his mind for two to three years before he ultimately decided to pursue free agency in March 2020.
The Weight of Two Decades
Brady reflected on the natural tension that developed after two decades together, stating, "After twenty years together, a natural tension had developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed in our careers, and where the Patriots were moving as a franchise." This tension, he explained, stemmed from differing career aspirations and the evolving direction of the team.
He emphasized that the situation was a complex one, highlighting, "It was the kind of tension that could only be resolved by some kind of split or one of us reassessing our priorities." Ultimately, the decision to part ways seemed inevitable, leading Brady to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Acknowledging the Friction
Although Brady has previously addressed his departure from the Patriots, this is the first time he has openly admitted to the existence of tension between himself and Belichick. While previous accounts offered a more diplomatic perspective, his newsletter provides a more candid glimpse into the relationship's complexities.
Brady's revelations align with statements made by Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has also alluded to the growing friction between Brady and Belichick as a contributing factor to their separation.
Signs of Reconciliation
Despite the past tension, there are indications that Brady and Belichick have moved towards a more amicable relationship. Notably, Belichick attended Tom Brady's roast in May, suggesting a willingness to put past differences aside.
Furthermore, reports indicate that Brady reached out to Belichick regarding the Las Vegas Raiders' head coaching position before Pete Carroll was ultimately hired. This gesture demonstrates a level of respect and consideration between the two.
