UGA Student's Safety Concerns Ignored Following Tragic Campus Murder
A University of Georgia student's mother expressed concern over safety measures at the school after the death of a nursing student. An undocumented Venezuelan man, the brother of a murder suspect, was charged with possessing a fraudulent green card. Homeland Security Investigations learned of his presence while investigating the UGA murder. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted. Since entering the country, he has been arrested three times. The U.S. Attorney's Office confirmed his undocumented status. The murder suspect, also from Venezuela, is not believed to have a connection to the victim. The UGA Police Chief stated that the attack was a "crime of opportunity," and that the victim was not a UGA student. Classes and events at both universities were canceled. Police found the victim with visible injuries near UGA's Intramural Fields, and are investigating the death as a homicide. Autopsy results are pending.
