Vince McMahon Steps Down from WWE and TKO after Sexual Assault Allegations

Vince McMahon Resigns Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
Vince McMahon, the founder of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), resigned from his positions as TKO executive chairman and on the TKO board of directors following sexual assault allegations made against him by former employee Janel Grant. These allegations included claims of sex trafficking, abuse, and sexual assault during her time at WWE. McMahon's resignation was announced by WWE President Nick Khan, who stated that McMahon would no longer have a role with the company.
The Lawsuit and McMahon's Response
The lawsuit filed by Janel Grant accused McMahon and another executive of sexual assault and trafficking while stating that the organization either facilitated or turned a blind eye to the abuse. McMahon, however, has denied these allegations and expressed his intention to clear his name, stating, "I stand by my prior statement that Ms. Grant’s lawsuit is replete with lies, obscene made-up instances that never occurred, and is a vindictive distortion of the truth." Despite his denial, McMahon decided to step down from his executive chairmanship and the TKO board of directors effective immediately, out of respect for the WWE Universe, TKO business, its board members and shareholders, partners and constituents, as well as the employees and Superstars.
Legal Situation and Previous Incidents
It's important to note that McMahon has not faced criminal charges in connection with the allegations made in the lawsuit. TKO Group Holdings, prior to McMahon's resignation, emphasized that he did not control TKO or oversee the day-to-day operations of WWE. The company also mentioned that it takes Grant’s allegations seriously and is addressing the matter internally.
Following an investigation in 2022, McMahon had previously stepped down as CEO of WWE after it was revealed that he had paid nearly $15 million to four women over 16 years to silence claims of sexual misconduct. Despite relinquishing the CEO position, McMahon maintained control over the company as a majority shareholder. In a November regulatory filing, WWE stated, “Mr. McMahon can effectively exercise control over our affairs.” He was reinstated to the company’s board last year, World Wrestling Entertainment confirmed. As of now, representatives for Janel Grant have not provided a response to McMahon's resignation.
