AT&T Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Information of Millions: What You Need to Know
AT&T reports 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former customers' sensitive data, sparking investigations and customer notifications about the breach.
Recently, AT&T announced the discovery of a data breach involving sensitive information of millions of current and former customers. The telecommunications giant revealed that a dataset containing details of approximately 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders was found on the “dark web”. The compromised data includes Social Security numbers, passcodes, full names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and AT&T account numbers, with the information dating back to 2019 or earlier. Although financial information and call history were not part of the exposed data, the breach has raised concerns about the protection of customer information.
What Information Was Compromised?
The breach involved a range of sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and passcodes, which are numerical Personal Identification Numbers (PINS) typically four digits long. Additionally, full names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and AT&T account numbers may have been compromised. It is important to note that the impacted data is from 2019 or earlier and does not include financial information or call history.
How Do I Know if I Was Affected?
Customers impacted by the breach are expected to receive direct communication from AT&T via email or letter. AT&T initiated the process of notifying affected individuals, with email notices commencing on a Saturday following the discovery of the breach.
Actions Taken by AT&T
AT&T has already reset the passcodes of current users and has committed to providing credit monitoring services where applicable. Furthermore, the company has launched a comprehensive investigation in collaboration with internal and external cybersecurity experts to delve deeper into the breach and its implications.
Past Data Breaches and Potential Legal Ramifications
AT&T has encountered various data breaches of differing scales and impacts in the past. This latest breach, though still under investigation, bears resemblance to a similar incident in 2021 that was not publicly acknowledged by AT&T. Cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt highlighted the potential legal consequences for the company if it is found that the breach was not appropriately addressed. Hunt warned of possible class action lawsuits if impacted customers were not notified in a timely manner.
