Former Senator Joe Lieberman Remembered in Funeral Service
Stamford, Conn. - March 29, 2024 - Former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, who had represented Connecticut for several decades, will be commemorated in a funeral service today. Lieberman, who was also the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, passed away in New York City at the age of 82 due to complications from a fall, as confirmed by his family.
A Career of Service and Advocacy
Lieberman served as a senator from 1989 to 2013 and notably made history as the first Jewish candidate on a major party ticket when he ran as Al Gore's vice presidential running mate. Despite their defeat to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, Lieberman's contribution to shaping the political landscape in the early 2000s was significant.
Throughout his career, Lieberman demonstrated his independent stance, at times differing with his Democratic counterparts. In 2006, he secured his final term in the Senate as an independent, and later went on to establish the centrist political group "No Labels." This group is currently working towards setting the stage for a third-party presidential ticket in 2024.
