Man Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Immigrants Through California Sewage Pipe

Kevin Noe Campos Villa pleaded guilty to smuggling immigrants through a California sewage pipe from Mexico to the U.S., facing up to 10 years in prison.

A recent operation led by U.S. Border Patrol officers has uncovered a disturbing case of human smuggling at the U.S.-Mexico border in California. The operation, which took place near the San Ysidro port of entry, resulted in the arrest and guilty plea of Kevin Noe Campos Villa, a 20-year-old from Tijuana, Mexico.

Guilty Plea

Campos Villa pleaded guilty to charges of bringing in unauthorized immigrants at a place other than a designated port of entry. This offense carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The guilty plea was made in a federal court in California and sheds light on the dangerous and illegal activities taking place at the border.

Dangerous Assistance

According to the plea agreement, Campos Villa admitted to helping seven unauthorized immigrants travel through sewer pipes near the San Ysidro port of entry during heavy rains. These sewer pipes, which connect the U.S. and Mexico at multiple points, are normally secured with grates to prevent unauthorized access. However, during heavy rains, the grates are removed to prevent damage to the system, providing an opportunity for illegal activities.

Brave Intervention

U.S. Border Patrol officers witnessed Campos Villa assisting unauthorized immigrants through the sewer pipes, leading to a confrontation. Despite attempting to flee, Campos Villa and three immigrants fell into the Tijuana River, where they were rescued by San Diego lifeguards. Two of the immigrants were unable to swim and feared for their lives, underscoring the perilous nature of their journey.

Profit Over Safety

Campos Villa also acknowledged receiving payment for guiding the group across the border, highlighting the profit-driven motives of transnational smuggling organizations. U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath emphasized, "This case is yet another example of transnational smuggling organizations placing profits over safety."

Previous Smuggling Activities

Further revelations from Campos Villa implicated him in prior smuggling activities, including the construction of ladders to help people cross the U.S.-Mexico border fence.

Campos Villa is set to be sentenced on June 17, marking a critical juncture in the pursuit of justice for the victims and the enforcement of border security.
