American medal winners at the Paris Olympics receive financial bonuses, including payouts from the U.S. and World Athletics, and sponsorship deals.
Competitors representing the United States at the impending 2024 Paris Olympics will not only ascend the medals podium but will also be rewarded financially for their achievements. The U.S. is among a select group of nations that offer monetary incentives for winning medals of any kind at the upcoming Games. Furthermore, athletes taking home gold in track and field will receive an additional financial boost from World Athletics, the international governing body of the sport, marking a historic first.
Financial Rewards for U.S. Olympic Athletes
As per reports, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee disbursed $37,500 for each American gold medal won at the 2020 Tokyo Games, along with $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze medals. However, specific figures for the proposed financial incentives for the forthcoming Paris Olympics have yet to be disclosed. The payout structure from World Athletics includes a $50,000 reward for individual track and field event victors and a shared $50,000 for winning relay team members.
With these figures in mind, U.S. sprint sensation Gabby Thomas, who clinched individual gold in the women's 200-meter event and participated in two triumphant relays, stands to gain the most substantial financial reward among American track and field athletes. Additionally, celebrated figures in U.S. gymnastics and swimming have also made significant strides, with gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Torri Huske securing three gold medals each. Huske and swimming teammate Regan Smith also amassed five medals, while Biles garnered four.
Apart from the financial rewards from the Olympic and World Athletics committees, many U.S. athletes, including Biles and sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson, have lucrative sponsorship deals with major companies that provide them with additional funds. Notably, Richardson has entered into a multi-year, multi-million-dollar agreement with Nike.
